A few Wheel Trees!
We have a few different clones of Trochodendron araliodes around the garden & nursery. Here is a comparison of how some of them look after our recent cold Spell.
T. aralioides DJHT 99031 is a Daniel Hinkley seed collection from Taiwan. The new foliage emerges with a shinny maroon color in the Spring. The seedlings in the center photo we grown from seed collected at the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle, they have taken on many different color shades after the winter cold. On the right is whats known as the Iseli Clone. I believe it was originally imported from Japan by Iseli Nursery in the 1980's. The plant has wonderfully clean green foliage even during the winter months. Unfortunately it's proved to be the most difficult clone to propagate!

Maytenus boaria after the cold
This Maytenus boaria was undamaged by the recent cold. This is an as yet unnamed clonal form that may be getting a name in the future!

Two Helwingia after the cold
These observations were also duplicated on plants growing in the garden but these unprotected greenhouse liners show the comparison more clearly. On the left is Helwingia chinensis DJHC 965, it's hardly damaged by the cold. On the right is the Heronswood narrow leaf form showing significantly more cold damage to the foliage.
Tough as old boots!
This Nolina has been growing in our garden for about 10 years now. This past freeze was it's biggest test to date but it sailed through with no damage! Not believed to be a true cultivar but a collected seedling strain of an unidentified species collected at over 8000' in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon near the town of La Siberica.
